Eternal Light is a ma’amar (Chassidic Discourse) delivered by the Lubavitcher Rebbe on Zos Chanukah (the eighth day of Chanukah) 5746 (1986). It was subsequently edited by the Rebbe and published in 5750 (1989), in honor of the holiday.

The ma’amar begins with the Torah reading regarding the offerings of the Nesi’im (Princes) during the inauguration of the Mishkan. It draws a parallel between the eight days of the Mishkan’s inauguration and the eight days of Chanukah. While the number seven represents the natural cycle and the emotional attributes, the eighth day represents the supernatural and the attribute of Malchus (Kingship).

Based on the explanation in Chassidus regarding the dual nature of the “eighth”—as both the source of intellect (Binah) and the practical application (Malchus)—the Rebbe embarks on an in-depth discussion of why the eighth day of Chanukah specifically emphasizes Malchus. This leads to a profound exploration of why action is superior to spiritual revelation, particularly regarding the Messianic era.

In this book, the ma’amar appears with a linear English translation, accompanied by explanatory lessons, summaries, and background information.

In addition, a Preface tells the dramatic story and background of the events of 5738 (1977), spanning from the Rebbe’s heart attack on Shemini Atzeres to the historic “completion” of those events on Zos Chanukah. The reader can see how, on a deeper level, Zos Chanukah celebrates the full revelation of the Rebbe’s leadership—the attribute of Malchus—within the physical world. A comprehensive Introduction explores how the ma’amar’s explanation of the number eight and the “guardian of the cycle” reflects this victory of light over the darkness of nature.

Eternal Light teaches how our own increase in concrete action illuminates the darkness of exile and hastens the actualization of the redemption— “Moshiach Now” in the most literal sense.

Eternal Light is the third volume in the Living Chassidus series, whose goal is to bring the timeless teachings of Chassidus to life, with practical day-to-day application.
